The 1937 Charter of the City of Cumming set forth
the following Mission for the Chief of Police...
“It shall be the duty of the chief of police by himself or through the force under him and at his command, at all times, to preserve the public peace, good order and tranquility of said city and its inhabitants, to prevent the commission of crime and arrest offenders, to protect the rights of persons and property, to provide proper police force and protection at fires, to protect strangers and travelers within the city, to suppress riots and insurrections, to disperse unlawful and dangerous assemblages and assemblages which obstruct the free passage of public streets, sidewalks, parks, and other places, to preserve order at election and public meetings and assemblages, to regulate movements of teams and vehicles in the streets, and to prevent the violation of all laws and ordinances in force applicable to the police of said city.”
The Mission Today...
The Mission for the Cumming Police Department has not changed. The Police Department maintains the responsibility for the protection of the City and its inhabitants and travelers, to regulate the movement of vehicles in the streets and to prevent the violation of all laws and ordinances in force. The Cumming Police Department strives to maintain a professional department willing to serve the public and to assist all citizens in every possible way. The Cumming Police Department enforces all laws within the boundaries of the City of Cumming as it applies to the ordinances of the City, the State of Georgia, and the United States. The Cumming Police Department serves as a deterrence of crime and a reduction of opportunities to commit crime, maintains an environment suited to the equal administration of the law, and provides each person his/her constitutional rights to liberty, justice and pursuit of happiness. The Cumming Police Department provides the highest quality police service through training and recruitment of the highest quality personnel.
