History
The town of Cumming, Georgia, was formed in 1834, a year after the creation of Forsyth County. It also became the county seat. Two 40-acre plots were purchased from the Cherokee Land Lottery by local officials for the downtown area. The plots were then subdivided into lots and sold off over the next several years, reserving one for the county courthouse. The town was named in honor of Colonel William Cumming, a Georgia native and distinguished officer in the War of 1812. Over the next 100 years the town grew into a city and appointed its first police chief, John R. Farr, in 1931.
We proudly recognize all of Cumming’s past police chiefs who have served our community for over 75 years
