Organization
The Cumming Police Department is organized into three divisions; the Uniform Patrol Division, the Criminal Investigations Division (CID), and the Support Division.
The Uniform Patrol Division
Our uniformed officers patrol the city 24 hours a day in marked black and white police cars and respond to emergen cies, conduct preventive patrols, enforce traffic regulations and interact with local citizens and businesses to build community relations on behalf of the city. The Uniform Patrol Division provides the main service of the Cumming Police Department. We offer patrol and emergency assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You can contact an officer by calling 770-781-2000 and speaking with one of our dispatchers. Each patrol shift is staffed by a supervisor and patrol officers who work on a 12-hour rotation. Patrol sections are overseen by a uniformed officer holding th e rank of sergeant. These officers provide crime suppression through high-visibility patrol in our black and white patrol cars. Our vehicles are equipped with specialized equipment such as in-car computers and citation printers, radar and laser speed detection, video cameras, and stolen vehicle tracking and recovery equipment. In addition to the basic Academy training, many officers hold certifications as training officers, specialized police instructors, and are trained in community relations, DUI enforcement, and police supervision. Many have attended countless other specialized courses. Our Uniform Patrol Division strives to be a public service organization and to foster a positive, safe community atmosphere for residents and visitors alike.
The Criminal Investigations Division:
Our detectives investigate all criminal activity, both felony and misdemeanor, within the corporate limits of the City of Cumming. This division has made multiple felony arrests in cases as wide ranging as embezzlement and fraud to drugs and murder. The division maintains close ties and participates in joint investigations with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), and numerous city, county, state and federal law enforcement agencies. This division currently consists of a primary investigator and several officers who assist as the situation warrants. The detectives are available at various hours due to the need to change scheduling to suit the current investigations. Consequently, if you need to speak with someone in the Criminal Investigations Division, it is best to make an appointment. This can be done by calling the main number at 770-781-2003.
The Support Division:
The Support Division encompasses the City Jail, Dispatch, Records and Reserves Sections. Reserve officers are fully certified police officers who wish to serve their community in a volunteer capacity and are vested with the same authority and meet the same training requirements as the full-time officers. The Support Division consists of Dispatch/Communications, Detention and Records and encompasses other functions needed to support the department’s primary mission of Uniform Patrol. The department maintains a Communications Center to provide a local contact for all of our citizens and visitors. The communications officers are cross-trained as detention officers in the event that a patrol officer or detective makes an arrest. Dispatchers/Jailers are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at 770-781-2000. The Records Unit is open between 8 am and 5 pm Monday through Thursday and 8 am to 4 pm on Friday. Generally, accident and incident reports are available within three business days after the report is taken. You may pick up a copy of a report during regular business hours (a nominal administrative fee may be involved). The Records Unit also provides background checks and alcohol serving permits. Permits can be applied for on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 8:30 am and 12:30 pm. Please bring all necessary materials, including a valid picture ID and a social security card, and be prepared to have your picture taken. In addition to the Records and Communications/Jail Section, Support Services Division also oversees public relations, quartermaster and equipment maintenance, hiring, policy, and other specialized operations of the police department.
