Retired and Senior Volunteer Program

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is sponsored by Legacy Link which is an area agency on aging designated by the Department of Human Resources in Northeast Georgia. It is responsible for advocacy for seniors, planning, and administration of programs, coordination and monitoring services in the area. Federal funds authorized by a wide variety of federal and state laws and programs are utilized by this non-profit agency.

RSVP helps individuals age 55 and older put their skills and life experience to work for their communities. RSVP volunteers serve from a few hours to twenty hours a week. They do just about everything--from tutoring teens and renovating homes, to planting gardens and programming computers. Even this web site was developed by one of its volunteers, Cumming resident Ron Kindland.

Today, more than 600 seniors participate in RSVP. Many volunteers have lived in their communities for a long time. Because the community has given them so much, they see serving as a way to give something back. RSVP volunteers discover that when they give, they gain a lot, too.

RSVP volunteers choose how and where they want to serve. Many continue the type of work they enjoyed earlier in life, while others try something completely different. As an RSVP volunteer, you might mentor at-risk youth, make hospital visits, teach English to immigrants, organize neighborhood watch groups, or help people recover from natural disasters.

You may commit to serving in one or more ongoing efforts. The number of hours you serve is flexible. You will receive a pre-service orientation, followed by appropriate on-the-job training from the agency or organization where you are placed.
